Book of the Week: If I Knew Then
21 Nov 2013
As part of preparations for the 50th reunion of Harvard Business School’s 1963 class, they collect advice for the younger generation from the alumni. If I Knew Then is a compilation of that advice.
What could those on the initial trajectory of a life or a career possibly learn from a group of mostly white, mostly wealthy, mostly men in their seventies or eighties?
This reminded a bit of 30 Lessons for Living. Each chapter consists of a series of quotes from the alumni. It is a quick read, but I got more value from 30 Lessons for Living. I would classify some of it as 1% advice. It is hard to see the world through the eyes of others. This is a peek through their eyes looking at the past. A few takeaways.
- Not giving your kids a big trust fund
- Taking your time to marry.
- Exercise
I should listen to old people more often.
