My Dell 1135n multifunction printer kept pulling multiple pieces of paper from the paper tray and kept jamming. This was annoying and I had to print one page at a time with only one sheet of paper in the paper tray. It would still jam when I printed only one page.
From previous adventures in finding drivers, I knew that the Dell 1135n multifunction printer is a rebranded Samsung SCX-4623fw [1]. This made it easier to find other people who had the same issue. I found numerous pages describing how to troubleshoot mulitple feed jams [2, 3, 4, 5]. The breakthrough came when I found a page that mentioned that the solenoid can get stuck [6]. There are two main issues, the rubber on pickup roller gets worn out after heavy use or the foam on the solenoid disintegrates with age and leaves the adhesive residue.
It is easy to replace the pick up roller [7, 8]. A Dell 1135N Pickup Roller manufactured by Samsung costs $28.89 [9]. The print pickup roller part number is JC93-00087A, which on found on Amazon.com for $3.80 before shipping [10]. I could get the part for $4 shipped from China on eBay.
My pickup roller looked good, but I opted to rotate the rubber since it was a loop of rubber to reveal the unused side. The issue wasn’t with the pickup roller, but it was what I tried first.
The HP support page that talked about the solenoid also linked to a Cantonese Youtube video on how to take apart the printer and clean the solenoid [6, 11]. I used isopropyl alcohol to remove the foam. I used tape to replace the foam as a spacer, but it doesn’t have the noise reduction properties of the foam.
This fixed my printer and saves me from having to buy a new printer and putting this one in the landfill.
