Moen Shower Cartridge

My shower started leaking. I suspected it was the shower cartridge. I was able to read Moen Dialcet on the fixture, so that narrowed down the brand.

Moen has 4 cartridges

• 1200 original cartridge
• 1222 turned on by rotating the handle
• 1225 (newer) updated 1200 model, temperature adjusted by pulling handle out
• 1255 (newer)

1200 and 1225 are interchangeable. 1200 is all brass and more expensive. B at end of the model numbers just stand for bulk.

This Old House has a video on How to Replace a Shower Cartridge. I didn’t need the shower cartridge tool since I was unable to unscrew the knob. I had to break the knob in order to remove the cartridge. Time caused the screw to seize and the slot to be worn down. I was able to pick up a replacement knob. The new knob had more plastic pieces than the original. When inserting the cartridge, the words MOEN should be facing up. If you find that the hot and cold water have been switched, flip the cartridge 180 degrees.

In the end I was able to repair the shower so it didn’t leak anymore.
